Regional Bronze Caps a Strong Summer for Athletics

It has been another excellent summer for our athletics programme, with strong performances across multiple age groups and competitions providing an impressive demonstration of consistency, depth, and high level performance.

Now in its fourth season, the programme’s focused and structured approach to training, alongside closer integration with the PE curriculum and a growing strength and conditioning offer, are clearly delivering real dividends and helping to build a more consistent pathway for Eltham athletes as they develop.

That progress has been particularly evident in competition this summer. At district level, both the Year 8 and Year 9 girls’ teams were crowned Cambridge Cup champions – excellent results which reflect not just individual ability, but growing competitive resilience within the squad.

At representative level, ten Eltham athletes were selected for London Schools, testament to the strength of the programme and its ability to prepare pupils to compete beyond school fixtures.

In team competitions, four of our squads reached the Regional Finals, underlining the depth the programme is now building across year groups. The highlight came from the Intermediate Boys (Years 9 and 10), whose composed performances earned them a well-deserved bronze medal against strong opposition, a great result which both speaks to current quality and sets an important benchmark for future squads to build upon.

Alongside these results, we are seeing a noticeable shift in culture within the group, as the programme continues to cultivate a powerful team ethos. Our athletes are increasingly bringing together their own drive for individual excellence with a sense of collective responsibility towards team success, in an environment where performance, commitment and support go hand in hand.

With younger athletes already showing great potential and many continuing to improve year on year, there is real optimism about what the programme can achieve next.

Head of Athletics, Edd Thorogood, said:

“Consistent training, strong S&C provision and athletics embedded within the PE curriculum are driving sustained progress and regular success at regional level.”
