Year 10 Geographers Explore Lewisham
On Wednesday 24th June, 86 intrepid Year 10 geographers demonstrated outstanding resilience, determination, and adaptability as they completed their urban fieldwork investigation during the current heatwave.
To make the most of the cooler morning temperatures, we adopted an adaptive approach to the day, leaving school promptly at 8:40am and travelling early by train from Mottingham to Lewisham. We are grateful to TfL for allowing us to use their free school travel passes on a peak-time service, enabling students to travel sustainably at no additional cost.
Throughout the morning students collected a range of primary data, including Environmental Quality Surveys, land-use observations, and photographs that they used to create detailed field sketches back in the classroom. A particular highlight was the questionnaire survey, where students showed impressive initiative and confidence in approaching local residents. Their proactive attitude resulted in a wealth of valuable data for their investigations.
The students represented the school exceptionally well throughout the visit. They were polite, courteous, engaged, and respectful, earning positive interactions with members of the public.
On returning to school, students continued their work in large groups, beginning the process of analysing and interpreting their findings. Fortunately, they were able to complete this stage of the investigation in the comfort of our cool computer rooms.
Well done, Year 10! Your enthusiasm, resilience, and commitment to your learning made for a highly successful day of fieldwork despite the challenging conditions.
