Eltham College Teams Secure Top Finishes at National Chess Finals
Pupils from both the Junior and Senior Schools enjoyed an excellent day of competition at the national finals of the ECF School Chess Championships in Nottingham, with Eltham College represented by teams in the Under 11 and Under 13 categories.
In the Primary Team Challenge for Under 11s, Junior School students Amelia (Year 6), Christian (Year 5), Louise (Year 4) and Rehaan (Year 6) performed incredibly well against strong competition from across the country. The team were able to outperform their pre-tournament rating and finish an impressive sixth out of 20 teams. The highlight for our team, though, was defeating Westminster Under School who had beaten Eltham in the qualifying rounds just a few months before.
The Junior Team Challenge for Under 13s saw the Senior School team of Ayaan (Year 7), Benno (Year 7), Sasha (Year 7) and Yash (Year 8) – three of whom had previously been Junior School chess players – produce an exceptional performance to take an outstanding second place overall in the national competition.
The team were undefeated across five matches, recording three wins and two draws. Going into the final round with everything still to play for, the squad delivered a commanding victory to secure the second place outright.
Congratulations to all involved on representing Eltham College so successfully on the national stage.
