Chalmers Wins House Music Competition
This year, over 100 students took part in the annual House Music competition, which brought together the traditional House Music and House Singing events for the first time, creating a single showcase of musical performance across the Houses.
The competition began with solo preliminary auditions across three categories, with finalists selected to perform in an afternoon of instrumental and vocal performances. Winners and runners-up in each category earned points for their Houses, while participation in the preliminary rounds also contributed to the overall standings.
The Vocal Ensemble section, formerly House Singing, brought together students from Year 7 to Upper Sixth, with each House performing an a cappella arrangement of a song chosen, arranged and directed by pupils. Moffat won the section with their rendition of Counting Stars by OneRepublic, securing 25 points. Across the competition, audiences were treated to performances ranging from ABBA’s Dancing Queen by Chalmers and Hooked on a Feeling by Carey to Livingstone’s rendition of I’m a Believer.
After points from all events were combined and adjusted to reflect participation in the preliminary rounds, Chalmers emerged as the overall winners. Chalmers and Moffat finished level on gross points, but Chalmers secured the title after participation points from the solo categories were applied.
The event was adjudicated by former Eltham Director of Music Paul Showell, who praised the exceptionally high standard of instrumental performances in the solo categories and the musicality shown by Category 1 performers. He also highlighted the range of year groups represented in the Vocal Ensemble performances and the confidence with which pupils took to the stage.
Congratulations to all the pupils who performed and contributed to another memorable House Music competition.
