The Economics of Saltaire
In their final session on Saltaire the Year 7 Scholars had their first encounter with some economic theory. Having touched on the science behind steam engines, the geographical factors determining the location of the factory and the religious motivations of Sir Titus it was now time to think about profit and loss. Working in pairs the students considered all the various production costs involved for a mill owner, how flexible these might be, and what might determine the level of profit or loss. This led into a debate about imports and exports, child labour, health and safety, wages and more. In their final task the students examined a diagram of the Capitalist system and skilfully analysed the standpoint of the author. The level of engagement and understanding was most commendable.
