Year 7 Geography: Exploring Mottingham

Year 7 geographers have been taking their learning out into the field this week, investigating Mottingham High Street, as part of their topic on 20-minute neighbourhoods.

During their fieldwork, they collected primary data through pedestrian and vehicle counts, land-use mapping and questionnaires with members of the public. The questionnaires were always a particular highlight. Some students completed nearly ten in just 45 minutes! Although many initially felt nervous about approaching pedestrians, they quickly grew in confidence, demonstrating excellent communication skills and approaching members of the public with courtesy and politeness.

Back in the classroom, they have made excellent use of their devices and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to measure green space in Mottingham and create annotated maps showing the location of services and facilities. They also compared past and present street view images to visualise how the High Street has changed over time.

This combination of fieldwork and digital mapping has allowed the geographers to investigate their local area from different perspectives and we are delighted with the curiosity and engagement they have shown. Well done, Year 7!
