Celebrating Junior School Languages Week 2025 at Eltham College

Friday marked the end of languages week, wrapping up a vibrant celebration of global cultures and languages across the Junior School.

Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in creative, hands-on workshops designed to spark curiosity and appreciation for the world beyond the classroom.

The festivities began with a delicious twist: Monday’s Bake-Off saw pupils showcasing their culinary talents with cakes inspired by cultures from around the world, designed to look like everything from the Welsh Flag to a German bratwurst.
Each cake sold for £1, raising funds for International Needs, and the judges had a tough time choosing winners from such a high standard of entries. Congratulations to:

Carey – Sophie Norris (Tower Bridge)
Chalmers – Livia Macri-Lupo (Sicilian Roman Temple)
Livingston – Zach Dolan (Union Jack Fruity Cake)
Moffat – Freddie Keelan (Sushi Cupcakes)

Midweek, the art room transformed into a burst of colour during the Venetian Carnevale mask-making workshop. Students explored the history of the iconic festival and crafted their own ornate masks using glitter, sequins, and vibrant paints.

Later in the week, there was the Mandarin workshop, where pupils learned to introduce themselves and count to ten in Mandarin. But this wasn’t your typical language lesson. Students paired the phrases with expressive dance moves, turning vocabulary into choreography.

The week closed with International Dress Up Day, a lively celebration of identity and diversity. The school corridors became a runway of traditional attire, and imaginative outfits representing countries from around the globe.

A huge thank you to all the students, staff, and workshop leaders who made this year’s Languages Week such a colourful, creative, and meaningful celebration of language and culture.
