Year 8 Explore Microclimates Across Our School Grounds

Year 8 geographers have been making the most of our beautiful 70-acre school grounds in their lessons as they explored the fascinating topic of microclimates. With the sun shining (on most days!), students worked in teams to investigate how conditions can vary dramatically even within a short distance. From the sheltered corners around the Foxbury to the open expanses of our playing fields, they discovered clear contrasts in temperature, light, and wind.

Equipped with anemometers, light meters and even bubbles to track wind direction, they practised applying their geographical skills and key vocabulary in a real-world context. Teamwork and decision-making were at the heart of the tasks as they discussed where best to collect data, compared their findings and later drew thoughtful conclusions about how microclimates vary around the school grounds.

At home, they photographed their gardens or local areas, making links between their own surroundings and the key words we had learnt in school. This blend of school grounds fieldwork and homework tasks has given the pupils the chance to develop essential enquiry and analytical skills, as well as improve their geographical literacy. Well done, Year 8!
