Hands-On Microbiology: Testing Antimicrobial Effectiveness

As part of their ongoing study of microbiology, Lower Sixth Biology students took part in a hands-on practical focused on E. coli.

Using aseptic techniques to prevent contamination from airborne microorganisms, students prepared culture plates and then investigated the effectiveness of an antimicrobial of their choice compared to a common domestic antibacterial and a control.

This practical was an excellent opportunity to develop essential laboratory skills while exploring key concepts such as immunology and antibiotic resistance. Observing the results first-hand gave students valuable insight into how microbes respond to different treatments and highlighted why antibiotic resistance remains a pressing global issue.
