Junior School Earns RHS School Gardening Award Level 1

Part of our excellent facilities here at the Junior School is a small, verdant garden that lies close to the playground. This has created a vibrant co-curricular activity as well as an area that is known to help with wellbeing. You cannot open a school magazine without a feature dedicated to the virtues of outdoor space and learning.

As soon as the weather warms up, the garden is open every day to anyone that wants to help out, especially with watering. Gardening club runs all year round for whomever would like to join, and takes place each Monday lunchtime. However, every child in the Junior School gets to have a vested interest in the garden with the rather competitive growing competition that we set each year. Last year it was for the sunniest sunflower; the year before, the heaviest harvest from each class’s potato. These plants are sown by each form in their classrooms and then planted out into the garden when they have become robust seedlings.

We are following the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and recently submitted evidence to gain our RHS School Gardening Award Level 1, which we have now achieved. We will continue to work through the levels the RHS set as we enhance and maintain our colourful, productive joy which is our little Eltham College Junior School Garden.
