Year 7 Wellbeing in Action: Teamwork Towers Take Off!
Our Year 7 students have made a fantastic start to the latter part of the Lent term in their Wellbeing lessons, where the focus this half-term is on teamwork, communication, and thinking skills.
In a recent lesson, 7AZM were set an exciting challenge: working in small groups, they had to build the tallest free-standing tower possible using only a limited selection of materials. Each team had to allocate roles, carefully plan and build their design, and even queue up to collect pieces of cello tape, which were handed out in varying (and sometimes surprisingly short or long!) lengths. All of this had to be achieved in under 10 minutes.
The classroom was buzzing with energy as students worked competitively but collaboratively, negotiating ideas, adapting plans, and encouraging one another under time pressure.
What impressed us most was the thoughtful reflection that followed. The students identified a wide range of skills they had used, including planning, creative design, clear communication, and negotiation. Some recognised that every role mattered: even being the team member responsible for tape-queuing was an important and valued contribution to the team’s success.
Most importantly, everyone really enjoyed the challenge and came away with a deeper understanding of how to work effectively with others, a skill that will support them well beyond the classroom.
