Lower Sixth Students Awarded Inaugural Martin Weston Travel Prize

We are delighted to announce that three Lower Sixth students have each been awarded the Martin Weston Travel Award, a new award offered by the Modern Languages Department to Lower Sixth linguists.

Modern Languages are an important, strategic subject in a globalised world where speaking only English is as much of a disadvantage as speaking no English. They enable our students to distinguish themselves academically and open opportunities such as studying at elite institutions in Europe, as well as being a valued essay-based subject for entry to American universities. They are strategically important for the economy and international engagement, enabling individuals to participate fully and respectfully in a connected world.

The purpose of the award is to offer students the opportunity to spend time during the summer of their Lower Sixth year in a country where the language(s) they are studying for A Level is spoken, to further their linguistic and personal development ahead of the Upper Sixth year.

Many congratulations to Sophie M., Ed T. and Emily  R. Sophie will spend time on the French/Spanish border, studying both French and Spanish, whilst also learning to surf. Her time spent staying with host families will provide excellent linguistic and cultural immersion.  Emily has opted to study French through a range of language and cultural courses, participate in local volunteer work and stay with a host family. Ed will set off to Granada to gain work experience in the field of cricket. He will be hosted by a Spanish family, take Spanish lessons and coach cricket, applying his Spanish in a work environment.
