A second group of Year 8 Scholars recently visited the Junior School to lead sessions with Year 5 pupils on a philosophical theme. 5ND were the latest group to be both entertained and challenged by their Year 8 mentors.
The focus of the lesson was an exploration of the question “What is Truth?” Using a PowerPoint presentation, worksheets, and small group discussions, the Year 8s led an engaging and thought-provoking session in which all the Year 5 pupils participated enthusiastically.
By the end of the lesson, pupils came to understand that there are multiple definitions of “truth,” not just the commonly known correspondence theory — the idea that something is true if it matches a situation in the real world that can be verified.
The Year 5 pupils handled these challenging ideas impressively well. Not only did the Year 8 students design all the learning resources, but they also led the session with great skill and confidence.
Class teacher Mr Dale remarked that the children thoroughly enjoyed being taught by the Year 8 pupils. “They love philosophical discussions,” he said, “and it was great to see them so engaged.”
