The Chapel
Opened in 1904
Eltham College was founded in 1842 as the ‘School for the Sons of Missionaries’ so it is not surprising that our large school chapel forms to this day an important and integral part of our school life.
The Chapel, steeped in tradition, remains an abiding fixture, facilitating daily services tailored for diverse year groups. Under the guidance of the school Chaplain, Revd Jim Houghton, the Chapel serves as the focal point for the School’s Christian Union group, also known as ‘ECCE,’ who host their regular meetings there, and also serves as a focal point for reflection and private prayer at any time of day by students and staff.
Marking significant moments in our school calendar, Eltham College celebrates poignant ceremonies at the Chapel including leavers’ services and solemn commemorations like the Act of Remembrance each November, alongside our cherished annual tradition of Carols by Candlelight.
The space is also used for non-religious purposes. For instance, the student-led Congress meetings are held every term there, and sometimes for staff meetings. Additionally, during holiday periods, its doors are open to the local community for weddings and other services.
