Greenwich University Sports Science Trip

24 Year 9 students embarked on our inaugural HPAP & Sports Scholars trip to the Sport Science Centre at Greenwich University. Over the course of the morning students took part in four laboratory sessions.

The morning was superbly run by the University lecturers, with state-of-the-art facilities allowing the students to delve into the world of sports science. Over the course of 4 rotational lab sessions students were able to measure their muscle force, take readings of their gas analysis on the tread mill, register their percentage increase from standing jump to counter movement jump and se the effects of fatigue on muscles through ultrasound.

This is the first step into securing a long-lasting reciprocal partnership with Greenwich University and this exciting morning session whet the appetite of further studies into Sports Science.

Lab session 1
Isokinetic Dynamometer to measure muscle force looking at forces of agonist/antagonist muscles in a seated position and ratio’s between the hamstring/quadricep.
Lab session 2
Treadmill run with gas analysis
3 submaximal stages of increasing speed with gas measured constantly to look at aerobic efficiency
Lab Session 3
Ultrasound to look at muscle architecture
Bodpod body density/body composition (example only)
Sled Push
Lab session 4
Force plate Countermovement jump
Speed gates over 10-15m
Biomechanics demonstration of movement using 3D motion capture
testimonials
The morning was amazingly interesting and super fun! it gave me a proper understanding and insight into the where sports science could take me but it was also was useful to learn about my own muscle ratios, speed and power, and how to increase them!

I really enjoyed being able to try and see the tests that high level athletes would use. And see the link between sport and biology.
