Leave a Legacy

Leave your legacy to Eltham College

Like many who enjoyed bursaries (or Direct Grants/Assisted Places) here in the past, we want future generations to be able to benefit from the same opportunities. The benefits of bursary awards extend beyond those who receive them; they enrich the whole College by enhancing its intellectual and social diversity.

Our vision is to establish a bursary endowment fund which will continue to grow and provide bursary places in perpetuity. This is an ambitious objective for the College, and it will not be possible without your help.

By including a gift to the College in your Will, you help shape the future of Eltham College. Your legacy will help us become fully inclusive, working towards equity in education through the provision of 100–110% bursaries. Basics such as school uniform, sports kits, musical instruments, educational trips and even school lunches can still be barriers for students attending the College – even when their fees are covered. We want to completely remove this burden from families and ensure bursary students have the same opportunities as their peers.

Legacy Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure my loved ones are looked after?

We fully understand that your family and loved ones come first in your Will. You can leave even 1% of your estate to Eltham College so that those closest to you still get 99%. Did you know that if you leave 10% of your estate to charity, inheritance tax due is reduced from 40% to 36%?

Why should I remember Eltham College in my Will?

For many, leaving a gift in their Will is their way of showing support to the College. An Eltham education helped change the trajectory of many OEs’ lives, making them who they are today – especially those who benefited from the Direct Grants/Assisted Places schemes between 1945 and 1997. Their very presence at Eltham College also helped make it a diverse and more interesting place to learn. A gift in your Will ensures today’s pupils benefit from those same opportunities whilst enriching the school’s intellectual and social diversity. A gift to Eltham College in your Will is an investment in future Elthamians and an opportunity to ‘pay it forward’.

How do I remember Eltham College in my Will?

Simply tell your Solicitor/Will-maker that you would like to remember Eltham College in your Will and give them our Registered Charity Number: 1058438.

I already have a Will – how do I include Eltham College?

Ask your Solicitor about adding a ‘Letter of Wishes’ or a Codicil to your Will. They’ll need Eltham College’s Registered Charity Number: 1058438.

Why is it better to leave a percentage of my estate to Eltham College as opposed to a fixed sum?

Possessions (specific gifts) and fixed sums (pecuniary gifts) are paid out from your estate first. A fixed-sum might feel appropriate at the time of making the Will, but (hopefully) many years later, it may not have the intended impact due to rising costs and inflation. Leaving a percentage of your estate to Eltham College will ensure your gift keeps up with rising costs over time.

What impact will my gift have?

A gift of any size towards our Bursary Fund helps to truly transform the lives of the recipients. For the 2023-24 academic year, school fees are nearly £24,000 per year.

  • A legacy gift of £50,000 would fund one pupil through the sixth form.
  • A legacy gift of £167,000 would fund one pupil through seven years of senior school.
  • A legacy gift of £500,000 (invested and returning around 5%/£25K per annum) would effectively fund a bursary in perpetuity.
Can I give now instead of leaving a legacy?

Yes. Many people enjoy seeing how their gifts can benefit students at Eltham College first-hand. Some taxpayers may prefer to make a gift now, allowing for tax efficiencies during your lifetime. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact the Development Team on 020 8857 1455.

Do I have to tell Eltham College if I have remembered the school in my Will?

We understand that making a Will is a deeply personal matter and you are under no obligation whatsoever to inform us if you have remembered the school in your Will – however, we would be delighted should you choose to do so. If the school is aware of your decision, it enables us to share current bursary progress at Eltham College with you, as well as to thank you during your lifetime.

What are the inheritance Tax benefits of leaving a legacy to Eltham College?

Eltham College is a registered Charity (RCN: 1058438). Under current rules (Oct 2023) if you choose to leave 10% or more of your estate to Eltham College, then inheritance tax liability reduces from 40% to 36%.

What happens if I die without a Will?

The government decides who is going to administer your estate.
