If the length of your arm from shoulder to middle finger tip represented the age of the earth, where would the span of human existence be? If geological time was represented by one hour, how long would we have been around for?
Some challenging questions which the Year 7 Scholars enthusiastically grappled with led by Head of Geology and Geography Mr Paul Angel. In a fascinating session exploring how our understanding of the age of the earth has deepened with the advent of new technologies and using images of rock formations in Scotland, the students were given, in a short time, a very effective understanding of “a long time.
Mr Angel also highlighted the significance of the impact that humans have had on the planet in their very brief time on it. This final session of the term was much enjoyed by the students.
Incidentally it was the tip of the finger nail and one second!
